Star Anise

Description

Star anise is one of the most visually distinct and aromatically powerful spices in the world. Named for its striking star-shaped pods, it is native to northeast Vietnam and southwest China. Despite the similar name and licorice-like flavor profile, it is completely unrelated to common anise seed or fennel—though they all share an organic compound called anethole, which gives them that signature sweet, herbal punch.
