Black Cumin

Black cumin is one of those fascinating ingredients that goes by a dozen different names, but most commonly refers to Nigella sativa. It is the seed that most people are actually looking for when they talk about the health benefits of 'black cumin' or 'black seed.' Though frequently mislabeled as black cumin, black caraway, or onion seed, kalonji is completely unrelated to any of them. It is the seed of a beautiful, pale blue flowering plant belonging to the buttercup family. Physically, the seeds are matte, pitch-black, and distinctly angular or teardrop-shaped, resembling tiny shards of charcoal with a bitter, pungent flavor.
